These are my videos from my first journalism 215 class… Enjoy 🙂
Project #1: Composition
This was a video production project of different focal length shots. We used different shots that included: extreme close up, close up, medium shot, long shot, and extreme long shot. For one of the subjects for this project, I used a bobcat that was on Wood Street in front of the Point Park University library. I was the director and editor and the camera man; I also picked the subjects that we used. I shared this footage with Kyle. The lessons I learned from my success and mistakes were simple. The mistakes included not recording enough footage and making sure the camera was in focus. The successes that I learned from this video was how to use a VJ kit. I learned that if you take your time and actually learn the information you can do anything. I never thought I would be able to do this class. The best thing about this project was getting out of my comfort zone and exploring around the city. The only thing I would have changed about this project is the final image…”what is it?” I wish i would have picked a better, more creative, and harder subject to guess.
Project #2: PSA (Public Service Announcement)
This project was a PSA (public service announcement) for a non-profit company. This PSA project was on anything you wanted to do it on and I chose drugs. This PSA project was my favorite. I was the director and editor and the camera man; I also came up with the idea and i got the actors. I edited the piece and I did not share the footage with anyone to edit. The lessons I learned from my success and mistakes were simple. The mistakes included not recording enough footage and making sure the camera was in focus (the same as the composition project). The successes that I learned from this video was how to edit and cut in Adobe Premiere. The best thing about this project was working with kids and my friends. I thought working with kids would be hard because of their attitude or attention span. The only thing that was hard about making this video was having to raise the tripod when they were laying on the floor coloring because of my height.
Project #3: Interview/NAT sound
This video project was interviewing someone with a natural sound in the background. This was an enjoyable project to shoot. This project taught us to focus on the “rule of thirds” and recording the subjects voice but also having a natural/background sound. We also put B roll to put over the interview subject talking. I shot this with my classmate Brian. I was the videographer and he came up with the different shots. We worked well together and had a fun time shooting. Shooting this video showed me a lot about shooting light colors, shooting outside with natural light, and editing with sounds in mind. Shooting with light colors, his pants for instance, was not fun to edit with. His white pants blended in with the dirt of the baseball field and made it hard to color correct. Shooting outside with the natural light was nice and easy until the sun went down. The best thing about this project was how cool it was shooting and editing motion shots. The only thing I would change about this project would be putting my interview subject in black pants, not white. It would have made my editing life a lot easier.
Project #4: Free Form
This project was about anything you wanted to shoot about. Some chose DJ’s, I happened to choose needles and botox. The free form project was my absolute favorite video to shoot. I did it with my best friend and my mom. While shooting this video, remembering to use the rule of thirds was very important. The different shots in the video, a close-up of the needle going into her forehead, was my favorite shot. I was the director and editor. I also came up with the shots and told the actors what to say. I learned from my mistakes and successes in different ways. My biggest mistake on this video was color. Color was hard because we did this in her office and it was night time (when the office was closed). Plus the neon lights did awful for color complexion for my subjects. The biggest success was how focused the camera was. The only thing I would change about this video is about the ending of my mom. It was dark in my room when she did the ending.
Project #5: Final Project–Fiction
(Revised link in wiki in schoology!)
This project idea was the most difficult to me. Then, it clicked to me, I’ll just make a video about my past relationship. This project could be about anything the director wanted. I chose a toxic relationship with a toxic guy. This project had very little talking and was shown through just video and music. I was the editor, producer, and director. I did not share any footage with any classmates and I edited this alone. I learned from this project that color matters. My mistake was that dark rooms are so hard to shoot in and light is very important to have good video footage. My success was the format in working with the ending. The last shot with bree’s engagement ring answering the phone is my favorite part of the video. I would change the coloring of this video, especially the parts with mike.
